Analyse technico-économique de projets d'élevage d'ombrine (Sciaenops ocellata) en cages flottantes à la Martinique ArchiMer
Houel, S; Falguiere, Jean-claude; Paquotte, Philippe.
The availability in interesting sites and the zootechnical performances of tropical fish are two impo rt ant assets in favor of the development of fish farming in the Caribbean islands. This repor presents a technical and financial analysis of red drum farming projects in floating cages in Martinique(French West Indies). This project analysis makes it possible to compare the economic feasability of a small-scale production system with that of a semi-industrial one submitted to different technical constraints. The main criteria of the project analysis are the profitability of the funded capital, the financial feasability during the buildup period, the profitability at a steady state and the cost price. Production costs are hi gher in the the small-scale...

Assessing the economic impact of an emissions trading scheme on agroforestry in Australia’s northern grazing systems AgEcon
Donaghy, Peter; Rolfe, John; Gowen, Rebecca; Bray, Steven; Madonna, Hoffman.
Although agriculture generates a significant portion of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, it also has the potential to sequester large quantities of emissions through changed land use management such as agroforestry. Whilst there is an extensive amount of agroforestry literature, little has been written on the economic consequences of adopting silvopastoral systems in northern Australia. This paper reports the economic feasibility of adopting complimentary agroforestry systems in the low rainfall region of northern Australia. The analysis incorporates the dynamic tradeoffs between tree and pasture growth, carbon sequestration, cleared regrowth decomposition rates and livestock methane emissions in a bioeconomic model. The results suggest there are...

DIAGNÓSTICO SÓCIO-ECONÔMICO DA PISCICULTURA PRATICADA POR PEQUENOS PRODUTORES DA REGIONAL DO BAIXO ACRE. AgEcon
Sa, Claudenor Pinho De; Balzon, Tatiana; Oliveira, Tony John; Bayma, Marcio Muniz Albano; Carneiro Junior, Jose Marques.

Mehl, Peter; Plankl, Reiner.
A large portion of the agri-structural policies and agri-environmental policies in the Federal Republic of Germany are decided within the framework of complex decision-making structures and fiscal responsibility at different political levels (the federal states, the national government, and the European Union), resulting in “double-interlocked federalism”. This paper describes the specific institutional configuration and its historical development, and presents a financial analysis of the development plans for rural areas in selected federal states to illustrate the increasing role of interlocked federalism. The interplay between the political levels took an unexpectedly flexible, and between the various states heterogeneous, form. All in all, however, the...

Etude technique et économique de la filière de production intensive de la palourde japonaise Ruditapes philippinarum en marais ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Paquotte, Philippe; Ayel, Jean-philippe; Lepage, Claude.
A 20 g clam total weight was reached in 19 months at a 300.m-2 density using a mixture of sea water and Skeletonema costatum algae. Currently, initiating an intensive ongrowing clam business is not economically viable since the marketable value is at a record low of 30FF.kg-l . Phytoplankton production and sea water pumping cost effectiveness should be improved. However, a company's activities may be diversified using intensive clam rearing techniques but without labor staff increase.

Faced with the imminent opening up of the trade in México in 2008, cultivation sugar cane (Sacchrum spp.) It has a strong competitive pressure from other producing countries that are operating with cost and low prices. Zopounidis, C.; Shiniotakis, N.; Baourakis, George.
Cooperatives constitute a "creation" of the social necessity for equal opportunities in the production and disposal of products. Nevertheless, the development and redistributive role of cooperatives in Crete has become open to controversy throughout the recent years, due to the problems of development and management that the co-operative organizations are called upon to face. In order to examine the economic environment and the competitiveness of cooperative Unions in Crete, a study aiming at the discovery of solutions for the reforming and increasing of competition among of agricultural unions was conducted. Free Cash Flow Is At Least as Important as Profit in Assessing a Farm Firm AgEcon
van Blokland, P.J..
This paper suggests that most small agribusinesses can use a short cut to see how their firms are doing financially. The short cut requires that they calculate and follow (1) profit and (2) free cash flow. Both are defined and clarified. The reason for this short cut is that most small firm owners do not do enough financial analysis and that this simple and quick study may encourage them. The paper does not encourage the substitution of these two numbers for a proper analysis. They are useful but more of a bait to land the full course.

Labor requirements and profitability of alternative soil fertility replenishment technologies in Zambia AgEcon
Ajayi, Olu Clifford; Akinnifesi, Festus K..
Low soil fertility is a major concern in agricultural productivity and development policy discourse in sub-saharan Africa. The problem is exacerbated by government withdrawal from fertilizer input markets and the inability of private sector operators to fill the gap. This warranted a search for other nutrient sources to supplement chemical fertilizers. Based on field data collected in Zambia, this study assessed the labor inputs implications of “improved tree fallows”, continuous maize cropping with and without mineral fertilizer and, evaluated the financial profitability of the different land use systems. Results show that agroforestry-based land use systems are more profitable (NPV between $233 and $309 per ha) than farmers’ practice of continuous maize...
